                                                   Camera Obscura

Alhanzen who lived around 1000 A.D invented the first pinhole camera, also called the camera obscure.

The word "camera obscura" comes from the latin word meaning "darkened room."

The camera obscura is a dark chamber that receives a image through a small opening or lens then focuses the image onto the surface. ( not film or plate )

Later in the 10th century they used the camera obscura to demonstrate how light travels in a straight line.

In the 13th century they were used by astronomers to view the sun

Camera obscures used to be big rooms but in the 16th century they became portable boxes with lenses and mirrors

As technology improved the surface size of the projected image improved as well

Johann Zahn improved the camera obscura then used it to experiment with photography

The camera obscura was used for many things like sun viewing, painting, drawing, photography, and tourism.

The camera obscura became popular in the 19th and early 20th century when many were built for both entertainment and educational purposes, but at the end of the 20th century its popularity decreased
